(C3-2) Lightning Talk | Exploring the Potential of Upstream Prevention for Youth Substance Use Prevention: An Examination of the Icelandic Prevention Model’s Implementation in Diverse Canadian Communities
Description

A growing number of Canadian communities are adapting the Icelandic Prevention Model (IPM) to prevent youth substance use, providing an opportunity to explore the model’s potential for systems transformation locally and nationally. This presentation will share findings from a recent study exploring implementation of the Icelandic Prevention Model (IPM) in 11 diverse Canadian communities. Led by the Knowledge Development and Exchange Hub for Youth Substance Use Prevention (KDE Hub), this study applied the Consolidated Framework for Implementation Research (CFIR) (Damschroder et al., 2022) to understand unique considerations for implementing the IPM in Canada. Findings include: 1) The importance of building engaged coalitions; 2) upstream prevention requires a paradigm shift; 3) Youth engagement is a necessary component; and 4) Unique adaptations need to be made for Canadian contexts. We will explore the potential of shifting conversations about youth well-being upstream and some of the tools needed to accomplish this paradigm shift.
