In meeting with a parent advisory group from Parents for Children’s Mental Health (in collaboration with CMHO), it was clear that parents were concerned about siblings being affected by another child in the family with a mental disorder. They also discussed the lack of resources available for these siblings and potential resources that could be implemented. Our team conducted a scoping review to (1) examine the effects on siblings of children with mental disorders and (2) identify and assess the effectiveness of sibling resources. We confirmed that siblings are at risk for developing psychopathology themselves and experience a wide range of negative emotions and experiences (e.g., fearful of violence from child). We also found a paucity of research that assessed resources for siblings, indicating a lack of resources available for siblings. Additionally, none of the research on sibling resources included parent or sibling voices into the creation of these resources.
