(C4-3) Lightning Talk | Why Caregivers Matter: New Findings From Emotion Focused Family Therapy
Description

This lightning talk introduces Emotion Focused Family Therapy (EFFT), a trauma-sensitive, caregiver-centred model that strengthens youth mental health by equipping parents with concrete therapeutic tools. Adapted from Emotion Focused Therapy, EFFT engages caregivers through a brief two-day psychoeducational and experiential workshop built around four core modules: (1) emotion coaching, (2) offering therapeutic apologies, (3) working through emotional blocks, and (4) addressing recovery blocks. In this presentation, we will outline these core processes, explain the mechanisms that make EFFT effective, and highlight existing research supporting the model. We will share outcomes from our recent longitudinal study of 155 families who completed a virtual EFFT caregiver workshop. Over 12 months, both caregivers and children demonstrated meaningful improvements in positive coping, with the largest gains among children. Together, these results illustrate EFFT as a scalable, accessible, and evidence-informed intervention that can be delivered virtually or in person to strengthen whole-family resilience.
