Surveys of youths indicate the impacts of climate change can lead to fear, anger, and hopelessness. Many feel they have done little to contribute to climate change, and yet have to face its impacts in their lives. This results in mental stress, which will likely increase in the future as climate-induced extreme events, such as heat waves and wildfires, become more frequent and widespread. A way to counter climate anxiety is to connect with the like-minded and to plan for action. Impact Net Zero (impactnetzero.ca) is a grassroots outreach organization that engages Canadians on climate action. We have engaged youth on climate anxiety, focusing on links with peers and connection with nature. We review the challenges of climate anxiety, and present a case study where we work with a youth who created a safe environment to connect with her friends, to build resilience and to take climate action.
